Football stars unite to tackle back pain

UK premiership player Rory Delap has teamed up with a number of other football ‘heroes’ across Europe to support ‘Back in Play’ a European wide campaign looking to raise awareness of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a poorly understood condition that affects the lower back.

AS is an inflammatory arthritis, characterised with lower back stiffness and pain. Most common in young men, the symptoms can often he confused with sports injuries meaning it can often be years before it is accurately diagnosed.

The campaign, supported by the Ankylosing Spondylitis International Federation (ASIF) starts off with the launch of the Back in Play website. The website features an ‘addictive’ football game which tests the players throw in skills, which highlighting the symptoms of AS. Additionally website visitors can watch a training class from Rory Delap as well as review the AS symptoms checklist compiled by the ASIF.

Rory Delap, who puts his flexibility and back strength down to his footballing skills believes that the new Back in Play website can help raise awareness of this largely unknown condition.
