Keep moving
This is very important if you have minor back pain. Continue with your normal activities (where possible), this often encourages back pain relief. Rest
Many people believe that resting their back when they have a minor sprain will relieve the pain. Lying/sitting in a static position can do more harm than good. Our bodies were built to move so keep resting to a minimum and start moving as soon as possible.
Heat
Applying a heat pack or hot water bottle to the affected area or having a hot bath can help ease the stiffness and tension in your back. Loosening the muscles can help you to move more freely. Heat treatment is also available in cream/gel form.
Ice
If the joint or area is swollen or inflamed, try applying a cold compress such as ice to the affected area. Make sure you wrap the ice up in a towel so it doesn't damage your skin. Ice therapy is also available in creams and gels.
Don't rush
Don't become impatient with your recovery, it can take time. Also, as your back pain improves make sure you don't overdo it too soon otherwise you could cause more back problems.
Medicines
Painkillers such as paracetamol/aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets like ibuprofen can help with back pain relief. However if you have an underlying problem which is causing your back pain, you should seek advice from your GP as medicines may only mask the problem, you may need further treatment from a physiotherapist or other healthcare professional.
